When the Spaniards arrived in Chile, the current city hall, Isla de Maipo, belonged to the cacique Talagante. He and the people there valued the facilities that the river delivered when they crossed it because it was divided into more than six branches and it was used as ford. When the European colonization moved forwards, the Jesuits were the owners of "PARTIDO DE TANGO" when they settled in Calera. Consequently, the ford of Lonquén or Isla de Maipo belonged to them, and of course it was used it in their trips between Concepción and the capital of the kingdom, which increased when "La Quintrala" at death's door, donated Partido de Angostura to the Compañía de Jesus as a way of paying the wrong that she did in her life. This donation included the current city halls: Mostazal, Codegua, Rancagua and Graneros. In 1898, a big thaw caused the overflowing of the river which caused enormous damage on the island village. However, with the help given by the congressman Daniel Santelices, parapets contained the flood and Isla de Maipo could be saved. On December 26, 1899, Santelices managed to get the autonomy of the island, when it was decreed Isla de Maipo as a city hall. To get an idea of what was the reality of the archipelago, we must consider the story of a distinguished English traveler, Mary Graham, who described the place in her travel diary on September 12, 1822.
